Meet the Staff of Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve...

A. Miles Arnott, Executive Director
Miles Arnott oversees long-range planning and the educational, horticultural, financial and administrative operations of BHWP. Miles' goal is to further establish the Preserve as a national player in the conservation of northeastern wildflowers, and to educate the public about the importance of floristic diversity to all life.

Miles has a B.S. degree in Biology and Environmental Studies with a concentration in Plant Science from East Stroudsburg University, and an M.S. in Botany from Tulane University, specializing in plant taxonomy and pollination ecology. Prior to coming to BHWP, Miles designed and maintained the indoor butterfly exhibit for the Audubon Zoological Gardens in New Orleans, served as Horticulture Manager for the Audubon Institute and supervised the operation of Audubon Park and the zoological gardens. Miles also worked as Interpretive Horticulturist at Callaway Gardens

Nancy Beaubaire, Director of Communications
Nancy Beaubaire was hired as Director of Communications in 2000. Her responsibilities include creating a quarterly newsletter, calendar and other publications, the BHWP website, public relations and marketing, special events and symposia, and media relations.

Nancy holds a B.A. in English from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. in Horticulture from Purdue University. She operated a landscaping business specializing in native plants and has worked in garden communications as an editor, writer, photographer and public speaker. She was chief editor of Fine Gardening, Country Living Gardener and Organic Gardening magazines, and worked in consumer horticulture for Bucks County Cooperative Extension Service.

Joyce Burian, Business Manager
Joyce Burian began as Business Manager in 2006. Her responsibilities include managing general office operations, administration of personnel matters, managing the Twinleaf Shop and rentals of the Moore Pavilion and Gazebo, and planning and implementing special events. She also is involved in marketing partnerships with tourism groups.

Prior to joining the staff, Joyce volunteered in the BHWP Visitor Center and at special events. She holds a bachelor's degree in Business Management and Law from Temple University. Joyce's professional experience includes work as a business manager, in international banking and as a flight attendant.

Amy Hoffmann, Education Coordinator
Amy Hoffmann began as Education Coordinator in mid-2008. Her responsibilities include developing, organizing and presenting educational programming, organizing workshops and symposia, developing and implementing the naturalist training program, managing interns, developing exhibits, creating brochures and presenting offsite programs.

Amy holds a B.S. in Plant Science from Cornell University and an M.S. from the University of Delaware Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture. She interned at Cornell Plantations, Parks and People Foundation in Baltimore, Morris Arboretum and The New York Botanical Garden.

Bob Mahler, Nursery Manager
Bob Mahler joined the BHWP staff in September 2008. He is responsible for all aspects of the Preserve’s native plant nursery, including propagation of plants for spring and fall sales and collection of seed. He also oversees propagation volunteers, works with interns and teaches propagation classes.

Bob studied bonsai and landscaping in Japan for 4 years. He worked for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for 11 years, where he was the Curator of the Bonsai Collection.

Jeannine Vannais, Plant Stewardship Index Coordinator
Jeannine Vannais was hired as part-time Plant Stewardship Index (PSI) Coordinator in 2005. She is spearheading BHWP's PSI program, which has been developed to provide the land preservation community with a quantitative tool to assess and evaluate open space and natural areas.

Jeannine holds a B.A. in Chinese art history from Gettysburg College. Her professional experience includes work with native plants, with an emphasis on medicinal plant uses. She worked as the Historic Herbalist at Pennsbury Manor, has taught extensively about herbs, and is a regular speaker at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Kathleen Muth, Volunteer Coordinator
Kathleen Muth joined BHWP as part-time Volunteer Coordinator in 2006. She is responsible for recruiting, scheduling and retaining the volunteers who are an integral part of BHWP's daily operations. Her job also includes improving the overall volunteer program.

Kathleen previously worked in the Mercer Museum shop, where she had experience with visitor services and merchandising. She holds a B.S. degree in geology and an M.A. in religious studies and spirituality. Her work experience spans positions as a geologist, in education, as director of a food pantry and managing editor of an online journal, along with volunteer work with Doylestown Hospital Hospice.

Dr. Paul Teese, Curator
Dr. Paul Teese was hired as Executive Director of BHWP in 1997 and took on the position of Curator in 2001. He is responsible for the development and care of the Preserve's collections, which include nearly 1000 species of Pennsylvania native plants, the Platt Collection of mounted birds, nests and eggs and a library.

Paul received a Ph. D. in plant ecology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He served on the Pennsylvania Biological Survey's Vascular Plant Technical Committee and worked with the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society.

Sebastian Brown, Groundskeeper
Sebastian Brown was hired as Groundskeeper in 2006. This position includes planting, invasive plant removal, trail building and maintenance, grounds maintenance and nursery help. Sebastian is a student at Bucks County Community College majoring in Network Technology. Prior to coming to the Preserve, Sebastian worked in the computer field and volunteered at Five Miles Woods in Lower Bucks County.
