Summer Internship Program |
 |
Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve provides internships to qualified applicants wishing to learn about native plants and public gardens. The Preserve features 134 acres of woods, meadows and a pond where nearly 1,000 species of native wildflowers, trees, shrubs, vines and ferns grow in naturalistic settings along 2.5 miles of trails. The internship includes training by Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve staff in the areas of native plant propagation, groundskeeping and trail maintenance, and public education and interpretation. Previous interns have received college credit for this program.
The internship program begins in May or June, runs for ten to fifteen 40-hour weeks and includes an hourly wage. Field trips to other botanical gardens, native plant nurseries and natural areas round out interns' understanding of plants and public gardens. Interns also are required to complete a special individual research or work project under the supervision of the Education Department.
Applicants must have completed at least 2 years of college, or the equivalent, and have a background and strong interest in botany, horticulture and/or related environmental studies. Applicants should be capable of rigorous outdoor work including lifting, digging and sustained walking, all of which are required at times during the course of the internship. Interns are responsible for making arrangements for housing and providing their own transportation.
To apply, complete the internship application and mail to Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve. Initial screening will be based upon this application and a cover letter only. Final selections will be based on personal interviews. Decisions will be made in compliance with the Employment Provisions of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act entirely without regard to race, color, religion, ancestry, age, national origin, gender or non-job related handicap or disability. Applicable rules and regulations of Federal and Pennsylvania Workman's Compensation and Labor Laws apply to all interns at the Preserve.
Deadline for application for Summer 2009 is Friday, February 20, 2009.
