Mosses and Liverworts - The Smallest True Plants in Our Forests
New Hope, Pennsylvania - The tiny tufts and patches of green that grow on the forest floor, cover tree trunks and cling to rocks are the smallest true plants in the woods, known as mosses and liverworts. Come learn about these fascinating members of the plant kingdom, how they survive without roots and how they reproduce without seeds.
Susan Munch, PhD, of Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania will present a slide program about mosses and liverworts, bring live specimens to examine and then lead a walk to identify common species of this plant group in their natural habitats. Dr. Munch has studied bryophytes (non-vascular plants) for years and is the author of the new book Outstanding Mosses & Liverworts of Pennsylvania and Nearby States.
This class will meet at the Preserve Visitor Center on Saturday, October 7, 2006 from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. The fee is $12 for non-members and $8 for members. Pre-registration is required by Friday, October 6. Call the Preserve at (215) 862-2924.
