Plant Stewardship Index: Introductory Workshop & Field Workshop Scheduled
The Plant Stewardship Index (PSI) is an analytical tool that allows stewards of public and private lands in the Piedmont area of Pennsylvania and New Jersey to survey and assess the status of the native plant populations on the properties they protect and manage. As a quantitative assessment of the floristic quality and botanical integrity of a site, the PSI offers a method for monitoring and evaluating land management practices, and affords granting agencies the ability to track those results over time. This workshop is designed for land stewards, private landowners and municipal officials.
Introductory Workshop
Tuesday June 27, 2006 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday June 27, 2006 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. (repeat of morning program)
Fee for either session: $80. Pre-registration is required by Monday, June 26; call the Preserve at (215) 862-2924, or email psi@bhwp.org.
Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve will hold an introductory workshop about the PSI. Participants will receive a copy of the Index and gain a thorough understanding of the PSI methodology and how its use can support the proliferation of healthy native habitats. The workshop meets at the Preserve Visitor Center.
Field Workshop
Saturday, July 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fee: Non-members $186; Preserve members $164. Pre-registration with payment required by Thursday, July 20; call the Preserve at (215) 862-2924, or email psi@bhwp.org. Fee includes a copy of the PSI and a packet of information on its use. Lunch not included in program fee; please bring your own bag lunch.
The Preserve's PSI Field Training Workshop will provide an overview of field sampling techniques and practical experience in the calculation of PSI values for a variety of habitats. The Field Training Workshop meets at the Preserve Visitor Center.
In the morning we will use the transect sampling method to assess the wildflower meadow and the plot sampling method to evaluate Penn's Woods, both at the Preserve. The afternoon session will provide an opportunity to do group sampling of a preserved property in New Jersey with a variety of plant habitats.
Please bring a clipboard, a pencil and your favorite botany field guide to aide in identification of plants at sampling sites.
