Programs for Kids, Families and the Young at Heart

New Hope, PA –Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve is offering many special programs this summer that will provide opportunities for kids, families and the young at heart to connect with the natural world. Unless otherwise noted, all programs take place at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pa. Please note: Children must be accompanied by an adult for all of these programs.

Children’s Summer Reading, Thursdays, June 4 – August 27, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Ages 3 through 7.

Fee: Non-members: adults-$5, seniors (62 yrs.+)-$3, fulltime students (15 yrs.+)-$3, children 4 through 14-$2, under 4-free. Preserve members: free. Pre-registration required by the Tuesday preceding each program; call (215) 862-2924.
Parents and kids are invited to explore nature’s alphabet. Preserve staff will read entertaining nature books followed by a guided hike and a nature craft to take home. Come to as many weeks as you like.

Insect Hunt, Saturday, June 13, 1 – 2:30 p.m. All ages.
Fee: Non-members: adults-$5, seniors (62 yrs.+)-$3, fulltime students (15 yrs.+)-$3, children 4 through 14-$2, under 4-free. Preserve members: free. Pre-registration required by Thursday, June 11; call (215) 862-2924.
Explore the buzzing world of insects in our wildflower meadow. Join us for a unique opportunity to catch, study and release – unharmed – a great diversity of bugs, butterflies, grasshoppers and more.

Birdhouse Blitz, Saturday, June 20, 10 – 11:30 a.m. All ages. New program!
NOTE: Jointly presented by the Preserve and Bucks County Audubon Society at Honey Hollow (BCAS), this program will take place at BCAS Visitor Center, 2877 Creamery Road, New Hope, PA. Fee: Non-members $30/per kit; Members of either organization: $25/per kit. Pre-registration required by calling BCAS by Tuesday, June 16, (215) 297-5880.
Eastern bluebird populations have been on the increase since the 1970’s, largely due to the increased use of nest boxes. You will be guided through assembling your own bluebird nest box (from a kit) to add to your backyard habitat. Make a birdhouse on your own or come with your family and make one or more birdhouses as a group. Then enjoy the bluebird’s activities throughout the nesting season. This is a great activity to do with Dad on Father’s Day weekend.

A Walk in the Moonlight, Saturday, June 20, 8 – 9:30 p.m. All ages.
Fee: Non-members: $6 adult/$4 child; Preserve members: $4 adult/$2 child. Pre-registration required by Thursday, June 18; call (215) 862-2924.
Walk the grounds at dusk with a naturalist guide to see nature in a different light. We might find fireflies in the field, see bats hunting insects over Pidcock Creek, observe moths feeding on native plants and more. Bring a small flashlight.

Stream Detectives, Sunday, July 12, 2 – 3:30 p.m. All ages. New program!
Fee: Non-members: $6 adult/$4 child; Preserve members: $4 adult/$2 child. Space is limited. Pre-registration required by Friday, July 10.
Come explore Pidcock Creek and the organisms that live in it and depend upon it. Join us for this special opportunity to study and release – unharmed – a diversity of aquatic animals, as we look under rocks and search the creek banks. You’ll find out about the importance of water quality and discover animal and plant adaptations. This will be a wet hike so please wear appropriate clothes and footwear. Closed toe shoes recommended.

Discovery Day, Saturday, July 18, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. All ages.

Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve invites everyone to our 10th annual Discovery Day. Experience a sampling of all the Preserve has to offer. Take a family treasure hunt. Join a guided wildflower walk through a meadow brimming with vibrant native perennials and grasses and beautiful butterflies. Enjoy the live bluegrass/folk music of Jericho Mountain Grass. Especially for kids, this event includes an insect hunt, nature crafts, a balloon artist and face-painters. Beverages and light snacks provided; bring a picnic lunch if you like. Monarch Journey, Saturday, August 29, 10 - 11:30 a.m. All ages. New program!

Non-members: $10 adults/$8 child; Members of either organization: $8 adults/$6 child; Pre-registration required by Thursday, August 27, (215) 862-2924.
Munch and molt, then munch and molt some more - that’s what Monarch caterpillars do! Then they look for a safe place to start the next stage of their remarkable metamorphosis. Come find out about the entire life cycle of the Monarch butterfly from Loretta Shigo of Monarch Journey, Doylestown, Pa. Learn what a “J” cat does, see a ‘Pupa Dance’ and find out how the Monarch butterfly tastes flowers. This program features a short DVD, viewing of live munching caterpillars, information on creating your own Monarch butterfly habitat and a walk to look for butterflies at the Preserve.
