Preserve Sponsors Lecture and Workshop by Dr. Gerould Wilhelm, renowned botanist and teacher of ecological restoration and stewardship

New Hope , Pennsylvania - Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve is delighted to sponsor a lecture and workshop on Sunday, October 30 by Dr. Gerould Wilhelm, a renowned botanist, teacher of ecological restoration and stewardship, and Director of Environmental Services at Conservation Design Forum, located near Chicago .

Dr. Wilhelm, along with Floyd Swink, developed the Floristic Quality Assessment Index methodology in the 1970's for determining the natural quality of plant communities. This work is the foundation for the Preserve's Plant Stewardship Index (PSI), a recently developed analytical tool designed to assist and educate professionals and landowners in monitoring and evaluating the relative ecological value of the plants and habitats that they protect and manage. The PSI has been developed specifically for the Piedmont Delaware Valley region of Pennsylvania and New Jersey . (For more information about the PSI, contact Jeannine Vannais, PSI Coordinator, vannais@bhwp.org, (215) 862-2924.)

Dr. Wilhelm's lecture "Native Plants and the Quality of Plant Communities" will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission to the lecture is free; donations are accepted. Pre-registration accepted; call the Preserve at (215) 862-2924. Walk-in's welcome as space permits.

The lecture will focus on the development, testing and application of the Floristic Quality Assessment Index, as well as practical uses of this method for habitat monitoring and restoration.

Dr. Wilhelm also will offer a workshop from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The workshop fee is $20, which includes a light lunch from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. Space is limited. Pre-registration required by Friday, October 28; call (215) 862-2924.

Workshop participants will have an opportunity to discuss, and ask questions about, use of the PSI methodology. The workshop will focus on case studies. Dr. Wilhelm also will take the group through outdoor areas previously surveyed at the Preserve during the PSI field workshop held in summer '05. This will be a unique opportunity to learn from Dr. Wilhelm's decades of field experience and to obtain his advice and input on individual efforts at stewardship, restoration and field observation.

The lecture and workshop will be held at Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, located at 1635 River Road (PA Rt. 32), 2.5 miles south of New Hope, Pennsylvania and convenient to I-95. For directions, call (215) 862-2924 or visit www.bhwp.org (select “Visiting BHWP” from main menu).
