Seed Now, Smile Later

New Hope, Pennsylvania - Out in nature, the seeds of many native wildflowers ripen in autumn, timed to take advantage of exactly the conditions they need to germinate. Follow Mother Nature's lead and sow native plant seeds in fall or early winter for your own garden. For a minimal cost, you can produce many plants. This is a great way to expand your garden or fill in gaps left by the summer's drought. You'll also reap the satisfaction of watching the miraculous process of growth from tiny seed to tender seedling to robust plant. Come spring, you'll be glad you planned ahead.

Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve sells seed of more than 100 plant species native to Pennsylvania and the surrounding region. Seeds can be purchased year-round, subject to availability of a given species.

The 2002 Wildflower Seed Catalog and seeds are available at the Preserve Visitor Center in the Twinleaf Shop. A new addition to the online Seed Catalog is a convenient downloadable order form that can be mailed in with payment.

The Wildflower Seed Catalog includes basic information about each species, including bloom time, flower color, mature height, moisture and light needs, and germination requirements. Native plants that especially benefit from fall-sowing outdoors are those species that require the moist, cold conditions of winter to break open their seed coat (a process known as cold stratification). For best results, sow these native plant seeds in flats outdoors in a protected place.

To learn more about propagating natives from seed, Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve offers a hands-on class, "Growing Native Plants from Seed", in early spring. For the date and details of the next class, look for the Preserve 2003 Calendar of Events online at www.bhwp.org in late 2002.

The Preserve is located at 1685 River Road (PA Rt. 32) about 2.5 miles south of New Hope, Pennsylvania and is open daily week year-round (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). For more information, visit www.bhwp.org or call the Preserve at (215) 862-2924.
