New Interpretive Trail Signs Enrich the Visitor Experience

New Hope, Pennsylvania - As visitors pass through the entry gate to the Preserve, they often wonder why a tall fence surrounds much of our grounds. Now, thanks to a new interpretive panel at the front gate, the purpose of the fence is clear-to keep deer out and prevent them from destroying the native plants within.

Similarly, three additional interpretive panels describe and illustrate other sites at the Preserve chosen for their ecological and biological significance, specifically the nursery, the front meadow and the pond. Through text and illustrations, visitors can learn about the habitats and plants that grow in each location, key plant/animal relationships, and our conservation efforts with native plants.

The impetus for the signs came, in part, as a response to visitors' requests for more guidance and orientation in understanding what they see at the Preserve, especially as they walk around on their own. As a result, the Preserve's Education Committee developed a plan to upgrade the presentation of the trails, and the panels are the first phase in this initiative to develop quality interpretation. These panels were funded by a grant from the Grundy Foundation and the Preserve's 2000 Annual Appeal. Three artists contributed to the project - Marcos Montiero, David Hughes and Gabrielle Sivitz.

Two more interpretive panels are currently in the works. In total, there will be twelve attractive panels scattered around the Preserve, all with the goal of helping visitors understand the importance of native plants and healthy ecosystems.
