Niche plants are those species that require very specific environmental conditions over time in order to grow and reproduce. This intolerance of environmental change is called species conservatism. Finding “highly-conservative species growing naturally on a site reveals a lot about that site’s geology, moisture conditions, and pattern of past disturbance.
Our Plant Stewardship Index Coordinator will show you 20 of the most conservative niche species you can find in our region, suggest where to look for them, and tell you which are most threatened by changing patterns of development and climate.
This class is designed for educators, naturalists, and amateur botanists.
If you have questions about any of the above PSI programs, please contact our Plant Stewardship Index Coordinator (psi@bhwp.org or 215-862-2924 x 101).
