PSI Educational Programs

Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve (BHWP) is offering the following educational programs and services tailored to educating and assisting individuals and organizations who want to learn how to use the PSI and to take full advantage of the potential of this multi-faceted analytical tool for land management and stewardship.

As new PSI services and programs are offered, they will be posted here. All programs will take place at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve. BHWP is located at 1635 River Road (PA Rt. 32), 2.5 miles south of New Hope, Pennsylvania and convenient to I-95. Click Here for directions.

Introduction to the Plant Stewardship Index
Wednesday, June 25 • 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
  Pre-registration with payment required by Monday, June 23.
Fee: Preserve members: $60; Non-members: $80

Introduction to the Plant Stewardship Index
Saturday, June 28 • 10:00 a.m. - noon (repeat of June 25 program)
  Pre-registration with payment required by Monday, June 23.
Fee: Preserve members: $60; Non-members: $80

This introductory course will give participants a thorough understanding of the Plant Stewardship Index methodology and how it can support the proliferation of healthy native habitats. The same program will be repeated on each of the dates listed. Fee includes a copy of the PSI and a packet of information on its use.

PSI Field Training Workshop
Wednesday, July 9 • 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Fee: Preserve members: $165; Non-members: $185
  Pre-registration with payment required by Monday, July 7.

This workshop provides an overview of field sampling techniques and practical experience in the calculation of PSI values for a variety of habitats. In the morning we will use the transect sampling method to assess Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve’s (BHWP) wildflower meadow and the plot sampling method to evaluate BHWP’s Penn’s Woods.

The afternoon session will focus on practical applications of the PSI and demonstrations of setting out transects and analyzing them. Please bring a clipboard, a pencil and your favorite botany field guide to aid in identification of plants at sampling sites. Fee includes a copy of the PSI and a packet of information on its use. Lunch not included in program fee; please bring your own bag lunch.

We also suggest that field workshop participants attend the PSI Introductory Course on June 25 or 28.

“Knowing Native Plants” Classes
Each session is held on a Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Fee: Preserve members: $10; Non-members: $15
  Pre-registration suggested; walk-ins welcome as space permits.

This series of seasonal workshops is designed to allow participants to hone their identification skills, and to become familiar with the seasonal diversity of our native flora in a variety of habitats. For a description of each class, go to the BHWP online Calendar of Events and search by date.

Additional Recommended Classes

1. Cool Season Grasses, Sedges and Rushes
Saturday, June 14 • 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Fee: Preserve members: $55; Non-members: $65
  Pre-registration required by Wednesday, June 11.

Bill Olson, New Jersey botanist and former Preserve staff member, will teach this day-long course on the grass, sedge and rush families. You will learn how to differentiate among these three families as well as learn some of the common species. This early season class will concentrate on the cool season grasses (including Agrostis, Poa, Festuca and Lolium) as well any sedges (Carex) and rushes (Juncus and Luzula) that we encounter. The class includes a slide presentation, a short walk on the Preserve's trails and a lab session to observe the finer details of these plants. We will build on information from previous classes, but newcomers are welcome. Bring lunch, a hand lens and any specimens that you would like identified.

2. Decoding Yellow Composites and Fall Asters
Saturday, September 27 • 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Fee: Preserve members: $55; Non-members: $65
  Pre-registration required by Wednesday, September 24.

Join botanist, Bill Olson, for the day to learn the members of the aster family blooming during summer and fall. This will include asters, goldenrods, sunflowers, as well as any other composites we have access to. The class will involve learning the terminology of the aster family, keying out species, looking at fine details of this family with hand lens and microscope as well as seeing plants along the trails in the Preserve. Bring lunch, a hand lens and any specimens that you would like identified.
