PSI Educational Programs

Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve (BHWP) is offering the following educational programs and services tailored to educating and assisting individuals and organizations who want to learn how to use the PSI and to take full advantage of the potential of this multi-faceted analytical tool for land management and stewardship.

As new PSI services and programs are offered, they will be posted here. All programs will take place at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve. BHWP is located at 1635 River Road (PA Rt. 32), 2.5 miles south of New Hope, Pennsylvania and convenient to I-95. Click Here for directions.

Plant Stewardship Index Introductory Workshop
Location: Bowman?s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pa.
Fee: Preserve members: $60; Non-members: $80
Pre-registration with payment required; call (215) 862-2924. This program will be repeated on several dates; see individual dates for pre-registration deadlines.

This introductory course will give participants a thorough understanding of the Plant Stewardship Index methodology and how it can support the proliferation of healthy native habitats. The same program will be repeated on each of the dates listed below. Fee includes a copy of the PSI and a packet of information on its use.

The Plant Stewardship Index Introductory Workshop also will be held in New Jersey.
Location: Duke Farms, 80 Route 206 South, Hillsborough, New Jersey
Fee: Preserve members: $60; Non-members: $80
Pre-registration with payment required. This program will be repeated on several dates; see individual dates for pre-registration deadlines and links.

This introductory workshop will give participants a thorough understanding of the PSI methodology and how it can support the proliferation of healthy native habitats and monitor the regeneration of degraded habitats. Fee includes a copy of the PSI CC list for New Jersey and a packet of information on its use.

Jeannine Vannais, Plant Stewardship Index Coordinator, will lead the programs at Duke Farms.
In addition, she will be joined by staff from Duke Farms who will be able to answer questions about regeneration projects on the property.

Plant Stewardship Index Field Training Workshop
Location: Bowman?s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pa.
Fee: Preserve members: $165; Non-members: $185
Date: Wednesday, July 8, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

This workshop provides an overview of field sampling techniques and practical experience in the calculation of PSI values for a variety of habitats. In the morning we will use the transect sampling method to assess Bowman?s Hill Wildflower Preserve?s (BHWP) wildflower meadow and the plot sampling method to evaluate BHWP's Penn's Woods.

The afternoon session will focus on practical applications of the PSI and demonstrations of setting out transects and analyzing them. Please bring a clipboard, a pencil and your favorite botany field guide to aid in identification of plants at sampling sites. Fee includes a copy of the PSI and a packet of information on its use. Lunch not included in program fee; please bring your own bag lunch.

We suggest that field workshop participants attend a PSI Introductory Workshop first.

A brief overview of the PSI methodology will be included in the workshop; participants will be best prepared by attending one of the Introductory Workshops earlier in the week. The Field Training Workshop provides an overview of field sampling techniques and practical experience in the calculation of PSI values for a variety of habitats. Many of the former manicured lawns of the property are being transformed into vibrant and ecologically biodiverse meadows that promote native pollinators. In the morning, we will use the area inventory sampling method to assess a meadow habitat. The afternoon session will focus on practical applications of the PSI and demonstrations of setting out transects and analyzing them. The Preserve will demonstrate its newly developed transect software for the analysis of transect data.

Please bring a clipboard, a pencil and your favorite botany field guide to aid in identification of plants at sampling sites. We will be accompanied by an expert botanist, as well. Fee includes a copy of the PSI and a packet of information on its use. Lunch not included in program fee; please bring your own bag lunch.

“Knowing Native Plants” Classes
Each session is held on a Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Fee: Preserve members: $10; Non-members: $15
  Pre-registration suggested; walk-ins welcome as space permits.

This series of seasonal workshops is designed to allow participants to hone their identification skills, and to become familiar with the seasonal diversity of our native flora in a variety of habitats. For a description of each class, go to the BHWP online Calendar of Events and search by date.

Additional Recommended Classes

Field Identification of Violets
Wednesday, May 6, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Fee: Preserve members: $30; Non-members: $35
Pre-registration required by Monday, May 4, (215) 862-2924.

Although there are 28 species of violets found in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, only a dozen or so are common in the deciduous woodlands of our region. Spend the morning with Bill Olson, New Jersey botanist and former BHWP staff member, to learn about the anatomy of violets and get tips on using dichotomous keys to identify common and not-so-common species. The class will include a slide presentation, a short walk on the Preserve’s trails and an outdoor lab to identify violet species in the field.

Sedges Have Edges: A Carex Primer
Saturday, June 6, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Fee: Preserve members: $30; Non-members: $35
Pre-registration required by Thursday, June 4, (215) 862-2924.
Bill Olson, New Jersey botanist and former Preserve staff member, will teach a half-day course on the sedge families. You will learn the most common species, and get a chance to see some of the rarer sedges in the Preserve’s collection, as well. The class includes a PowerPoint presentation, a short walk on the Preserve’s trails and a lab session to observe the finer details of these plants. Bring a hand lens and any specimens that you would like identified.

The Puzzling Polygonums
Fee: Preserve members: $30; Non-members: $35
Saturday, August 8, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Pre-registration required by Thursday, August 6,(215) 862-2924.
This half-day-long course on the confusing polygonum and smartweed families will be taught by Bill Olson, New Jersey botanist and former Preserve staff members. You will learn how to differentiate among these families as well as learn some of the common species. The class includes a PowerPoint presentation, a short walk on the Preserve’s trails and a lab session to observe the finer details of these plants. Bring a hand lens and any specimens that you would like identified.
