Floristic Quality in the Delaware Valley
Location: Bowman?s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pa.
Fee: Preserve members: $60; Non-members: $80
This introductory class will focus on the many applications of PSI. Land stewards are now using the PSI to identify high-quality remnant communities and to assess deer predation rebound effects, wetland health and riparian corridor setbacks. This class will outline the PSI methodology, its prairie history and expansion into the Mid-Atlantic states, and survey some of the ways it is being used regionally to monitor and assess our stewardship efforts.

PSI Master Class: Spring Blooming Plants*
Location: Bowman?s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pa.
Fee: Preserve members: $30; Non-members: $35
Date: Saturday, May 1, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Join Karl Anderson, N.J. botanist, to take a closer look at the species commonly encountered in an early spring Plant Stewardship Index survey. A short indoor session, focusing on the ecology, distribution and dispersal mechanisms of the early-blooming spring flowers, will be followed by outdoor investigation. Learn identification tips for the early spring plants, both the lovely ephemerals and the early signs of later-blooming plants. With this in mind, we will look for basal rosettes and other signs of flowers that will bloom later in the year, and for the identifiable “skeletons” of plants that bloomed the previous season. .

PSI Master Class: Wetland Plants*
Fee: Preserve members: $30; Non-members: $35
Date: Saturday, June 12, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

This class will be hosted at Pennswood Village in Newtown, Pa., where participants will get an in-depth tour of their award-winning wetland/meadow/stormwater project as well as have an opportunity to muck about and review the ID of some common wetland plants. Come learn the obligate wetland species that are likely to be encountered in doing wetland surveys. Mark Gallagher is the Vice President of Princeton Hydro and brings with him extensive experience in ecological restoration and stormwater management. This class will be held at Pennswood Village, Newtown, PA.

Plant Stewardship Index Field Traning Workshop
Fee: Preserve members: $165; Non-members: $185
After a brief overview of the Plant Stewardship Index (PSI) methodology and a short survey of sampling techniques, the class will spend the bulk of the day doing an area inventory and a transect /plot survey. Transect sampling techniques will be demonstrated that can be used in assessing larger properties. New software developed by BHWP will be demonstrated which combines abundance values with PSI/FQI indexing and calculates relative frequency and relative importance values across transects. This allows a close look at the “movement” of plant populations over time.

PSI Master Class: The Oaks*
Fee: Preserve members: $30; Non-members: $35
Date: Saturday, October 2, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
There are about 450 species of oaks world-wide, and about twenty species can be found in eastern Pennsylvania and adjacent New Jersey. This is one-fifth of all the native tree species found locally. They can be a confusing group. A classroom session featuring slides and specimens will be followed by a stroll on the Preserve’s trails, to look for oaks and identify them by leaves, bark, buds, and acorns.
