A Tool for Site Evaluation and Restoration
The Plant Stewardship Index (PSI) is a vital tool for assessing the quality of plant communities. It is effective and intuitive, and it produces scientifically supported metrics that speak to the quality of a site. The metrics are simple and broadly comparable between sites.
The PSI is a toolkit for land use planning, ecological restoration, and citizen science. The free online Plant Stewardship Index Calculator, developed by Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, offers floristic quality values for New Jersey and for the Pennsylvania Piedmont.
Based on the Floristic Quality Assessment Index (FQAI) methodology developed in Chicago for the assessment of prairie restoration projects, the PSI offers land managers and conservationists in the mid-Atlantic states a standardized measurement of the effectiveness of land management practices over time.
Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve offers educational opportunities and professional services in support of the Plant Stewardship Index.
