Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve is located in beautiful Bucks County in southeastern Pennsylvania, just a stone's throw from the Delaware River. New Jersey is located across the river; the Preserve is about 40 miles northeast of Philadelphia.

Once you've visited the Preserve, you have many choices for exploring the region.

Washington Crossing Historic Park, which commemorates the site where George Washington crossed the Delaware River in 1776, is 5 miles south of the Preserve. For hours, fees, and tour information, call the Park visitor center (215) 493-4076. The north section of the Park, with its historic buildings, sits across the road from us.

Bowman's Hill Tower, built in 1930 to commemorate the lookout of the American Revolution, is perched on a hill overlooking the Preserve. The Tower offers a magnificent view of the Delaware River and surrounding rolling countryside and a good look at the Preserve in the context of the regional landscape. You can walk through the Preserve up to the Tower visitor center (about one mile), or access it by car. For hours and fees, call the Tower (215) 862-3155.

Just up the road from the Preserve is the quaint town of New Hope, renowned for antique shops, boutiques, art galleries and a variety of restaurants. Browse in the shops, enjoy a meal at an outdoor café, take a mule barge ride on the Delaware Canal, a boat ride on the Delaware River or a train ride on the New Hope and Ivyland railroad. Across the river from New Hope is Lambertville, New Jersey, which offers similar attractions as New Hope.

For the shoppers among you, take a ride to Peddler's Village, located in Lahaska about 15 minutes from the Preserve. The collection of shops and restaurants and the outlet stores at Penn's Purchase across the street should keep you busy. The Village also includes activities especially for children.

A trip to Philadelphia will reward you and your family with many avenues for experiencing history, art, science, theater, traditional ethnic neighborhoods and eating experiences, and even nature. (Fairmount Park, in Philadelphia, is the largest contiguous urban park in the U.S.) Youngsters and adults will find plenty to do.

If you enjoy the pleasures of a garden, then you'll find a treasure trove in the Philadelphia metropolitan region. The Gardens Collaborative, of which Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve is a member, is an association of the most beautiful gardens in the area. All encourage visitors of all ages; some offer programs and garden areas tailored toward children. Visit their website at www.libertynet.org/gardens for links to each member garden's individual website.
